I think everyone in Tech should have at least a little experience as a Software Engineer. Not only do the puzzles you encounter in code help greatly with your creativity and problem solving skills, but being a developer also helps you understand the struggles other devs at your company face every day. I decided I wanted a more high-level, operational role, so I moved on from only doing Software Engineering. That being said, I have a unique appreciation and respect for those that decidate thier careers to becoming masters of this discipline. I enjoy being more of a “jack-of-all-trades”.
I still write code to this day, and I was fortunate enough to not have AI to rely on in the beginning. I am concerned for junior devs coming out of college who have relied heavily on AI. In an experienced developer’s hands, tools like Claude Code can multiply productivity exponentially. Without the fundamentals, AI can run wild and write terrible code and ruin entire stacks. Fortunately, these days I do not have to do much other than explain what I want done and keep the AI in check. This website is an example!
